WORLD WEEK PROTESTS IN NYC, USA
Demo #1: Staples 1280 Lexington Ave. HLS Supplier
Twenty activists gathered at another popular Staples location, this time on Manhattan's Upper East Side, for Day 2 of World Lab Animal Liberation Week. Kudos to whoever did the market research to choose Staples locations. This outlet is at one of the busiest areas in the city. A steady stream of shoppers and neighbors stopped to pick up literature and to find out what Staples has to do with Puppy Killers.
Activists were quick to explain that although supplying HLS might not sound very important, without supplies HLS would be unable to continue to kill 500 animals every day. By and large the crowd was very supportive and once again, people made generous donations to the campaign. However, there always has to be that one deranged *sshole that feels compelled to taunt activists by crumpling up a flyer and throwing it at an activist. Very stupid move. We trust that the idiot that did this won't be doing it again any time soon.
The highlight of the protest was when a group of young people that were just passing by, numbering around 10 strong, stormed into the Staples and demanded to speak to the Manager. This group was so angry about what they learned about the brutality and the cruelty at HLS that they took off before anyone from the organized protest could stop them. One of the nice results of this was that Staples employees did not come out to hoot and laugh at the posters of mutilated animals like they have in the past. Activists vowed to return next weekend and every weekend until Staples pledges to cut their ties to HLS.
Demo #2: Staples Union Square HLS Supplier
Another popular location, Union Square was buzzing with shoppers and activists. Once again, the large banner featuring the bloody remains of a dead beagle puppy was unfurled as close to Staples doorway as our court order allows. Activists raised their voices in protest and attracted the attention of other activist who were hanging out at Union Square. Several joined the protest.
A handful of activists flyered the crowd, answering questions and accepting donations. The rest held a loud protest, which was no doubt heard throughout Staples multiple floors. Staples employees came out to heckle and taunt protesters, which only serves to make them louder and angrier. What kind of sick twisted individual can laugh at animal suffering? No doubt the future rapists and murderers of our community.
Wonder if those Staples employees realize just how bad this callous behavior makes their employer, Staples, look? Wonder if they realize how many customers turned away from Staples and asked activists where else they might go for office supplies. Information that the activists were only too happy to provide.
Demo #3: Wayne Merkelson, V.P. & General Counsel Novartis HLS Customer
Last protest of a long afternoon took place just blocks away from Union Square at the W. 10th Street home of Novartis VP Wayne Merkelson. Loud voices boomed in unison as chanting filled the quiet Saturday afternoon. As in previous protests hundreds of flyers were distributed and many stopped to chat and ask questions.
This building has some of the crankiest residents. They usually start dialing 9-1-1 as soon as the banner is out of its carrying bag. Police responded and told us that they had to respond to the call and that activists should carry on with what was clearly a peaceful and legal protest. Police came, not once but three times..every time they came, activists added an additional15 minutes to what was originally scheduled to be a fairly short protest.
