NOVARTIS, ARPIDA & ACTELION DEMOS IN BASEL
A group of activists welcomed and cheered Novartis employees as they went to work at their Basel campus. Not surprisingly, they weren't happy to see us, and some of them appeared really pissed off. There were some construction workers working near the protest who supported us, voicing their disgust for animal experimentation. Despite the use of megaphones being prohibited in Basel city, the protest was as loud and powerful as always.
After Novartis, we visited Arpida in Reinach (near Basel) where we had
the opportunity to demonstrate outside of their offices ahead of their
scheduled lunch break. Most of the blinds of the lower floor windows were closed, and the building's entrance was blocked by security, but we could still clearly see the workers on the upper floors. Strangely enough, nobody exited the building via the front entrance whilst our protest took place - perhaps they were too ashamed to face the truth about their involvement with HLS?
Now came the turn of Actelion, the only site where we actually had
permission to use our megaphones. We made sure we made full use of this,
making this protest easily the loudest of the day, giving the Actelion
workers no moment of peace.
During the evening, we revisited the Novartis campus to once again greet
the employees as they were leaving for the day. Whilst leaving the site,
most of the workers didn't even have the courage to look at the posters
and find out about the horrors that Novartis was complicit in. It's been a day that most of the Novartis workers surely won't forget - with both a morning protest as they arrived as well as an evening demo as they left for home - but we're certain that the animals currently inside the walls of HLS had an even worse day.
So long as these companies continue to deal with Huntingdon Life Sciences
and avoid making the compassionate choice, we will be back with more
demonstrations.
