“In the 1950s around 300,000 people in the UK suffered from diabetes; it has been forecast that, by the year 2010, the number of people suffering from the disease will have risen to around 4 million.

The huge investment in animal experimentation over the past five decades has done little to stem the rising prevalence of diabetes and other chronic diseases, such as dementia, asthma, heart disease and cancer. As a result, the National Health Service is no longer able to cope adequately with the growing numbers of sick and disabled people.

In short, animal research has failed to improve the health of the people of Britain and we should face up to that fact. It is time we moved our research investment away from animal experimentation and into common sense human-based preventative research. We owe this much to our children.”

Dr Edward Moore, O.St.J.
