home >> news PROTESTORS IN PHILLY TAKE TO THE STREETS ONCE MORE Friday, 27th February Philadelphia Animal Defense League took to the streets this Friday, February 27th, to protest against businesses who seek to make money by profiting from animal and earth exploitation. Our 2 major campaigns continue to be against Huntingdon Life Sciences (HLS) and I-69 the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) Superhighway. HLS is a contract animal testing (read: killing) facility with labs in England, Japan and New Jersey USA. They admit to killing 500 animals a day for things like tanning lotion and shampoo. Sick! The NAFTA Superhighway is set to be built from Canada to Mexico and will evict hundreds of families from their homes, force indigenous tribes off their lands, steal land from struggling farmers, pave over endangered wetlands, and kill off dozens of endangered species for good. These 2 monsters must be stopped! In a global capitalist market, the law of supply and demand tells us that no one can operate without customers and investors, so that has been our method: to get customers and investors to end their alliances with these 2 monsters. With the recent action of Wells Fargo and Turner Investments in dumping all shares of HLS, HLS finds their stock at an all-time low, not even meeting the qualifications of the New York Stock Exchange Arca on which it is listed. With that in mind, we took to the streets. Demo #1 – Dual protest Housed in the same building are a customer of HLS and a stockholder. What kind of people run this building? Xerox has an exclusive contract with HLS, and their employees must have seen the horrors happening inside HLS when they go in to fix the copiers. How can you keep going to work every day after you see that? American International Group (AIG) have received billions of dollars of bailout money from the US government, ‘lost’ some of it, and spent other money on taking a retreat for their executives. Shame on you. These same greedy people are also trying to profit off of the murder of 500 animals every day at HLS. They own 41,430 blood-soaked shares of HLS stock. You both need to drop HLS, and you need to do it right now. There is no excuse for your actions. Our protest outside AIG was the first of several ‘welcoming party’ demos at places we had not protested in Philly before. It was definitely not the last. Demo #2 Our next stop was directly across the street for another ‘welcome to the party’ protest. Bank of New York Mellon owns 26,634 shares of HLS stock, and they have been protested in other cities before. We were the Philadelphia welcoming brigade on Friday, and the employees in the lobby quickly ran and hid when we started calling them out for their shameful investments. HLS is not only morally bankrupt – soon they will be financially bankrupt, as well. Get out while you still can, before you own stock in a company that files for bankruptcy. HLS is sinking further in debt each day. And we couldn’t be happier about it. Demo #3 We hadn’t originally planned to visit our good friends at Janney Montgomery Scott, but we had to pass them to get to our next target, so we figured – why not? Janney Montgomery Scott is a member of the New York Stock Exchange, and has a direct say in which companies get to list their shares on the exchange. Shame on you, JMS, for trying to pull a fast one and listing HLS on the supposedly ‘anonymous’ all-electronic Arca exchange on Christmas day 2006. Nothing stays anonymous in this campaign. Nothing stays hidden. You put HLS on the exchange, and you can take them off. Do it now. There is no other acceptable answer for your crimes. You are enabling puppy killers, and that makes you an accomplice to murder. Demo #4 – Dual protest We staged another dual protest at our next stop. This time, we focused on 2 different campaigns and their financiers in the same building. Michael Baker Engineering is the chief architect of the NAFTA superhighway, which will kill off several endangered species. As if that isn’t bad enough, it will plunge local economies into billions of dollars of debt and evict thousands of people from their homes. This is despicable! The security was not surprised to see us. What they WERE surprised about, however, was that we had found out another evil corporation hides its ugly face in the same building: Oppenheimer Funds, which owns 63,050 shares of stock in HLS. From the same building, plans to profit off the killing of our mother earth and its most innocent inhabitants. Michael Baker, stop planning your stupid highway. To save an estimated 1 hour of driving time, you will destroy people, animals and planet? Your mother didn’t raise you correctly. Oppenheimer Funds, drop HLS. They’re a bad investment. A first-year business student could understand that owning stock in a company who loses money every day is a bad financial investment. Drop HLS like the bad habit they are, and do it now! Demo #5 Just across the street, we welcomed another new target to our campaign: TIAA Cref Investment, owner of 78,640 in HLS. This was a great location for a demo, and people flocked to the windows on every floor of the building to see what the noise was all about. People in the lobby came outside to support us and thank us for delivering our message. People on floors above that waved at us and smiled as they gave us the thumbs-up. TIAA Cref, we imagine that you lost a lot of friends in the building on Friday. How awkward must it have been riding down in the elevator with everyone who hates you after work ended for the day? Passers-by on the street went into the building and demanded to speak with management from TIAA Cref about this situation and were rudely escorted out of the building by security. Rather than toughening up your security, we have a simpler solution: dump your shares in HLS. One call to your stock broker could take 30 seconds, right? And then you’re in the clear from our campaign. So easy, a child could do it! Demo #6 Our final stop for the day was at yet another new target: National City Corporation, owner of 75,500 shares in HLS. So shameful. National City is housed in a building that does not bear any of their logos outside and gives almost no indication that they are they. They must be so ashamed, to take such measures. However, we knew you were there and even verified it with the front desk clerk. National City, shame on you! You are attempting to profit off of the murder of 500 animals every day. Do not be deceived! HLS is anything BUT life science. They kill, kill, kill. That’s all they know how to do. Drop your shares. See the light. The line is drawn, and we have made our stand. Join us. Otherwise, you’ll go down with a sinking ship, because HLS is billions of dollars in debt, and their stock price is in a complete freefall. Jump ship while you still can! Our overarching theme for the day was the history of the campaign against HLS and what has happened with companies who dropped HLS and what has happened with those who have tried to put up a fight. We make no promises, because we are not the ones committing illegal acts, but history has shown one thing: things got much worse for companies like Wachovia, Citibank and Marsh Inc. All around them, these targets can look out their windows and see companies who have dropped HLS: Wells Fargo (just last week!), Bank of America, Deutsche Bank, Citibank, Wachovia (even in the same building as 3 of the targets) and many others. If you’d like to get some advice, I’m sure any of them will tell you the same thing: drop HLS, and do it fast. It’s a long hard road for anyone who wishes to keep ties with HLS, and history has shown only one thing: We never back down, and we always, always win.
