BIRMINGHAM SHACTIVISTS CONTINUE TO SHAME BARCLAYS
Friday, 3rd April
We arrived at Barclays again in Birmingham to hold another protest against them for their
unethical ties in the world's most exposed animal testing lab, Huntingdon Life Sciences.
Greeted again by smiles from the manager, we could see she'd clearly missed us. However she
then had a bit of a mood-swing when all of a sudden she rushed to inform the police she felt"intimidated" by the protest. The police were almost as bemused by this as we were after
hearing of her initial smiles. Neither of her silly little antics made us budge of course, and
it seems that for once we were visited by a member of the police who actually knows a little
about the law - the duty officer, stated that there was NO PROBLEM AT ALL with us using the
megaphone on our protest. If you look at previous demo reports from our protests here, other
officers who have no idea and are too shrouded by their own authoritarianism, have even
threatened to confiscate the megaphone and arrest us because according to them it was
apparently illegal to use a megaphone here, which is clearly NOT SO!
However, the high IQ manager had another incredibly smart trick up her sleeve, she asked the
police that if we stopped recording, she would come out to us and make a formal request for us
to leave! What an honour eh?! As tempting as it was to roll out the red carpet and worship her
significant intelligence, we refused and carried on the demonstration.
After being informed by the police that Barclays did not appreciate the "SHAME ON BARCLAYS!"
chants in particular, we decided to pay a bit of extra attention to that one. ;)
The public were extremely supportive, shocked and disgusted at what Barclays invests money
into, vicious animal cruelty and unscientific experiments. Many of them took leaflets, wanted
to get involved with the SHAC campaign, went into Barclays to complain and closed their
accounts with Barclays. They even joined us in shouting and shaming the bank when we chanted.
We demonstrated against Barclays until they closed for the day, giving them plenty of things to
think about when they go home. One member of staff there came out to snap a picture of us, but
quickly flurried back into the bank when we shouted about us not having anything to hide, and
stating all about what they try to hide.
Sell your blood money shares Barclays, instead of supporting the torture and murder of 500
animals every day inside Huntingdon Life Sciences. Get some ethics and drop HLS!
