MORE SHAREHOLDER PROTESTS IN PHILLY

Thursday, 30th April

One week ago, the Philadelphia Animal Defense League (ADL) took to the city streets to protest against those who are profiting off animal abuse inside the halls of Huntingdon Life Sciences (HLS). That night, we served an important warning to the foci of our protests: drop HLS, or we’ll be back. Well, tonight, we were back.

HLS is a notorious animal testing (read: murdering) facility that kills 500 animals a day by its own admission, killing for things like shampoo and bleach. It’s disgusting, and our goal is to get all of their investors and customers to stop doing business with them so that they have to close once and for all. In a capitalist society, you can’t operate without money from customers and investors, so we went out to help cut those ties.

Demo #1 – Lisa Detwiler – Lawyer, Bank of New York Mellon
First stop this evening was the same as our first stop last week. Lisa Detwiler is the corporate lawyer for Bank of New York Mellon, one of the largest shareholders in Huntingdon Life Sciences. They own over 26,000 shares of stock in HLS (traded on the New York Stock Exchange Arca listing with the symbol ‘LSR’), and this is the money HLS so desperately needs in these hard economic times to keep killing. Money coming in means keeping the lights on, the employees paid and the non-human animals dying.

Drop HLS from your company’s stock portfolio, Bank of New York Mellon! Lisa, they seek your advice regularly as their lawyer. Advise them to drop HLS once and for all!

Demo #2 – James Cecere – Investment Manager, Vanguard Corporation
Our second location – just like last week – was just around the corner from our first location is James Cecere, the investment manager who was part of a handful of people at Vanguard Corporation who helped make the decision that his company should purchase 280,000 shares of stock in HLS. We think this is a really bad idea, James!

While across the street from James’ home, one of the neighbors came out and tried to be a tough guy. If not for the police showing up, we’re quite certain he would have physically assaulted everyone on the street. He yelled dozens of homophobic and queerphobic insults at us, and the fact that we were quite near the city’s gay neighborhood didn’t help his cause. Several people came out to yell at him for his offensive and bigoted language. He thought that he would override our demonstration, but – instead – he just drew more and more attention to our cause and allowed us to reach a wider audience. Thanks, guy! Also – everyone, including the person we were protesting against, thought you were stupid and made yourself look like a fool.

Demo #3 – Richard Vague – President & CEO, Bank of New York Mellon
Our last location for the evening was a new one – the home of the President & CEO of Bank of New York Mellon. As the highest employee of Bank of New York Mellon, Richard Vague can make the executive decision for his company to dump all shares of stock in HLS and cut his company’s ties once and for all. Richard, do the right thing! Drop your company’s stock in blood money and animal abuse. We’re just asking you to drop one company from your stock portfolio. That’s all it will take for us to go away and return your overpriced neighborhood to its previous state of tranquility.

Until then, Richard, we’ll give you the same promise we made good on twice earlier this evening: Cut your company’s ties with HLS, or we’ll be back. In these hard economic times, that’s one thing you can take to the bank for sure!
