PORTLAND ACTIVISTS PROTEST AT FORTRESS COMPANY

Today, around a dozen activists from Portland Animal Defense League descended on two offices of American General Financial Services, a subsidiary of Fortress Investment Group. Today's actions reflected the global Scary Science Solidarity Week of Action, a week dedicated to showing solidarity with the UK SHAC II trial.

Six animal rights campaigners are being sentenced in court as part of the second UK SHAC trial. They have all plead guilty and have been sentenced to over 18 years between them. All six defendants were arrested back in May 2007 as part of the vivisection industry's attempt, backed by the authorities to shut down the SHAC campaign. Scary Science Week is taking place globally during their trials.

In Portland, the target has been AG Financial Services, which was recently purchased by Fortress Investment Group. Fortress has given Huntington Life Sciences $70+ million in loans. Without this money, HLS would no longer be able to conduct its insidious 'experiments'. Without this money, HLS would no longer be able to kill 500 animals everyday. Without this money, HLS would no longer exist. This money comes from Fortress. This money comes from AG. This money is blood money.

Activists arrived dawned in Halloween masks, prepared to illuminate the real horrors that AGF finances. The office doors were opened and business was disrupted with chanting and sirens. Activists discussed daily atrocities committed by HLS with interested passersby, educated the public and gained allies. AGF stayed silent and effectively shutdown for the length of the demonstration.

Soon afterward, everyone decided to make the trip to another location of American General Finance. This time, the employees attempted to hide. But the protestors made their presence known as they surrounded the building at all entrances and exits. Eventually the police arrived and accomplished nothing. The employees had to learn that animal exploitation does not go unnoticed and that there is a community of compassionate activists that will hold them accountable.

Portland is just beginning to be a hotbed of anti-HLS activity. HLS, Fortress, and all associated are becoming the focus of efforts. As long as HLS has the resources to kill, torture and enslave, we will have the resources and resolve to fight back and shut them down.
