home >> news NOMURA PROTEST IN SAO PAULO, BRAZIL Friday, 24th September Marking the first ever SHAC protest in Brazil, activists gathered in the city of Sao Paulo (Brazil’s largest city and financial capital) to protest the local headquarters of Nomura, the company that owns over 30% of the shares of Fortress Investment Group, which currently serves as a savior to Huntingdon Life Sciences’ terminal financial health. Standing in front of it's fancy office building located right across from the city’s most expensive shopping mall at a pedestrian crowded avenue, 30 animal rights activists exposed very loud and clearly to the passing public and Nomura’s business neighbors what are this company’s investment choices: animal torture and bad science. To better illustrate what that means, a video set was mounted right on the sidewalk showing the images of pain and torture that go on inside HLS and which Nomura and Fortress are directly responsible in perpetuating. For many hours, while the activists held posters and made it very loud that animal torturers are not welcome in their city demanding that Nomura instructs Fortress to immediately cut their ties with HLS, neighbors kept flowing in as they returned from their lunch hour asking for information and receiving the leaflets that explained Nomura’s dirty practices accompanied by their contact details. One worker with an office in the same building asked for a bunch of leaflets so she would go from door to door inside the building to deliver the information so ALL of Nomura’s neighbors would know the kind of people they are sharing their elevators with. The media was present to tell the story and the police did not take long to show up, but only to serve as observers to our demonstration. There was verbal confrontation with what seemed to be representatives of the building administration, who found themselves forced to turn around and go back inside the building. Local activists were very glad to have started working with the SHAC campaign in Brazil, the translated posters are communicating well, the translated leaflets are offering further information and we were louder than ever! Having started the campaign to target HLS partners in Brazil, new targets are being researched and we will not stop until HLS has gone out of business forever!
