AXA'S AGM PROTEST IN PARIS

Wednesday, 27th April

Fourteen activists gathered just after lunch-time in front of the Palais des Congrès in Paris. AXA's annual shareholders' meeting was taking place that afternoon and we wanted to be there when they entered the building. AXA is a major shareholder in AstraZeneca, a discredited pharmaceutical company which subcontracts its testing to HLS, Europe's largest animal testing lab where 500 animals are killed every day.

When we arrived we had a pleasant surprise. There was already another demo on their doorstep! Trade-unionists were protesting against AXA's unfair redundancies and other problems like employees' harassment, depressions that had led to suicides... The trade-unionists were interested in our demo and gave us their support. AXA called the police to get rid of us but they were frustrated when they told them they wouldn't come. We unfolded our banner “Lâchez HLS” (Dump HLS), held SHAC's posters and other ones showing graphic pictures of vivisection. We shouted loudly and clearly that AXA should sell their AstraZeneca shares, we did our best to make clear to the people passing by that investing in the results of the suffering of animals inside HLS was a shameful act.
